Engineering Department: Sidewalk Information

Safe Routes to Schools

The Town of Amherst has partnered with local school districts and the University at Buffalo to make bicycling and walking a safer and more appealing transportation alternative in the vicinity of schools and other public places. To accomplish this goal, the Town participates in the Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS) program, an initiative funded by the Federal Highway Administration and administered by New York State Department of Transportation. The Program provides funding assistance for development of pedestrian oriented infrastructure such as sidewalks that enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school; thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age.

The Program is currently funding pedestrian infrastructure improvements to occur in 2011 in the following locations:

Country Parkway Elementary School Sidewalk Installation

Dodge Road Elementary Connector Path

Maple West Elementary School Handicap Ramp Replacement

Heim Elementary and Middle School Sidewalk Installation

The SRTS program is administered in Amherst by the Town Engineering Department, information is available at:
