Compost Uses

Compost for Lawn Care

Starting New Lawns & Patching Bare Spots

  • Apply a 1" to 2" layer of Amherst Compost to the soil surface and incorporate it to a depth of 6". Spread seed, then lightly rake it into the soil and water generously.

Lawn Maintenance

  • Apply a 1/2" layer of Amherst Compost over the lawn surface, then rake it in, and add water generously. Add seed prior to raking if desired.

Mulching

  • Carefully spread a 2" to 3" layer of Amherst Compost around trees, shrubs and flowers. When mulching around trees, the compost layer should extend from the tree's trunk to its drip line.

Compost for Flower Beds

Existing Beds

  • Apply a 1" to 2" layer of Amherst Compost to the soil surface and incorporate it to a depth of 6".

Planter Boxes or Raised Beds

  • Planter boxes or raised bed mixes may be produced by mixing 1-part Amherst Compost (by volume), 1-part pine bark and 1-part soil, sand or expanded shale. Plant desired materials and water generously.

Compost for Trees and Shrubs

Dig a planting hole 2 to 4 times the width, and equal to the height of the root ball. Mix 1-part Amherst Compost (by volume) with 2-parts of soil obtained from the planting hole. Place the plant in the hole and apply the soil mix around the root ball, firming the soil mix occasionally, then water generously.
