The Amherst Police currently have two police service dogs. Both dog and handler must complete a basic 13 week canine school conducted by the Niagara Regional Police, in St Catherines Ontario. K9 Teams are trained in tracking, building searches, obedience, agility, handler protection, and narcotics detection. Police service dogs must recertify twice annually. Officer Thomas J. Grillo Jr. (above) is a 11 year veteran of the police department coming to the K-9 unit from the Afternoon Patrol Platoon. Canine Sabre was also obtained from the Shallow Creek Kennel having been born in Slovakia. Sabre has been trained and certified in Criminal Search and Apprehension as well as Narcotic Detection.

Officer Robert Stephens (above) is a 15 year veteran of the force and comes to the K-9 unit from the Traffic Bureau. Canine Judge came to us from Slovakia through the Shallow Creek Kennel in Sharpsville PA. He has been trained and certified in Criminal Search and Apprehension as well as Narcotic Detection.
