Property Manager & Rental Unit Registration Division
In the summer of 2019, Chapter 43 & 44 of Amherst Town Code (Property Manager & Rental Unit Registry) was adopted and tasked the Town of Amherst Building Department with enforcing the new Property Manager and Rental Unit Registration requirements. An essential purpose of this law is to create a point of contact for rental properties creating a transparent relationship between the property owner and the Building Department ensuring that rental units are safe and that the surrounding neighborhood is minimally impacted by transient living and absentee owners. In the coming months, the Building Department will be sending out letters, advising of the regulations, to properties that may fall under the registry requirements. If you do receive one of these letters, please call the Building Department or walk in at Town Hall. For more information on the rules and regulations, please follow the link below.
Not everyone needs to register their rental units and not everyone needs to appoint a property manager for their rental units. Whether or not you have to register depends on how many units you make available to rent, where you live, and if you personally negotiate the rents for the units. If you rent properties in the Town, we encourage you to call the Town of Amherst Building Department to inquire if you do and instruction for how to register.
