The purpose of the Friendly Visitor Program is to provide socialization to isolated, home-bound individuals living in the Amherst area. It is a free volunteer service provided by the Amherst Center for Senior Services.
A Friendly Visitor is a Volunteer Who:
- Provides visits to seniors age 55 or older in their homes
- Enriches lives through personal contact
- Checks on a participant’s well-being
- Becomes a connection to the Amherst Senior Center Social Work staff on the participant’s behalf, as needed
How To Become a Friendly Visitor
Prospective volunteers need to be 55 or over and do not need to be a member of the Center or a resident of Amherst. All prospective volunteers undergo a background check at no cost. Volunteers are then matched with a senior in the community and checks on the participant’s well-being. The volunteer also becomes a connection to the Amherst Senior Center and the Department of Social Work staff.
