AMHERST HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES UPDATED POLIC

Effective November 1, 2016 the Amherst Highway Department is suspending pick up of televisions at the curb side. Previously, any Amherst resident in need of disposal of their television has been able to call the Amherst Highway Department to give their address for curbside pickup. However, due to the demands placed on our manpower during leaf season and snow/ice control season we do not have the resources to continue this program during these seasons. The Highway Department would like to thank the Amherst residents in advance for their cooperation in regard to this policy change. Stay tuned for more information regarding disposal of televisions and other electronics.

Leaf Pickup Starts November 1st

Amherst Highway Superintendent Patrick Lucey announced the Highway Department will begin picking up leaves on November 1st. All leaves along with other growth material can be put in open garbage cans or recyclable paper bags and will be picked up during the weekly garbage pickup by our refuse contractor Modern Disposal. Private landscapers are required to dispose of the leaves at their own expense. As a reminder, leaves cannot be placed in the road, besides plugging receivers or causing flooding problems it is illegal to place leaves in the roadway blocking the driving lanes of traffic. Leaf pick will continue systematically throughout the Town until all leaves are picked up or the snow prohibits us from doing so.

America Recycles Day

Tuesday November 15th is "America Recycles Day". This day is to show everyone how recycling your everyday materials helps not only the environment, but your neighborhood too. All of the Town’s recyclable materials are picked up by Modern Disposal. They go from house to house, street to street collecting paper, plastic, metal, and glass and load it in their trucks; this is called “single stream” recycling, meaning that everything gets placed into one vehicle and then gets sorted at a designated facility (Currently Buffalo Recycling Enterprises in Buffalo, NY), at the MRF (Materials Recovery Facility) the material is placed on large conveyor belts where people and machines sort the material by type and send it off to be baled or packaged up for redistribution. Below you’ll see photos of the conveyor system and photos of how your recyclables are packaged and ready to go to their next use! Remember to recycle S.M.A.R.T. - S- Set up your recycling tote somewhere easily accessible so you can use it often. M- Make sure what you throw in is on the list! A- Add your materials as you collect them, every day. R- Make sure they’re ready to recycle! Rinse out glass and cans, Reduce cardboard box size, Remove non-recyclable packaging contents. T- Take your tote(s) to the curb, you’re ready to recycle!
