Amherst Youth & Recreation is hosting a Summer Hiring Fair on Saturday, January 10, from 11 AM to 1 PM at the Williamsville Youth & Family Center 5005 Sheridan Dr., Amherst. Applicants must be at least 17 years old by 6/1/26. Lifeguards need to be certified and at least 16 years old. Must be available for pre-summer training and professional development. Snyder Fire District - Notice of 2026 Meeting Dates
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the regular meeting dates for the Snyder Fire District for the year 2026 shall be the third Tuesday of each month. The only exception is in the month of April when the meeting will be held on April 14, 2026. All meetings will start at 7:30 p.m. A special meeting shall be held on April 9, 2026, at 8:30 p.m. for the purpose of appointing the Chief and Assistant Chiefs. A special meeting shall be held on August 25, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. to prepare a preliminary 2027 Fire District Budget. A special meeting shall be held on October 20, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. for public comment on the proposed 2027 Fire District budget. All meetings shall be held at the Snyder Fire Headquarters, 4531 Main Street, Snyder, New York 14226. This notification is given pursuant to provisions of Section 94 of the Public Officers Law of the State of New York.

Senior Center Classes and Activities Cancelled - January 15
Amherst Center for Senior Services has cancelled classes and activities Thursday, January 15 due to the snowy weather conditions. The lunch program will still be available from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Please use caution when traveling; however, if you don't feel it's safe, please stay home. Amherst Senior Transportation ( ASTS ) is not operational today - clients will be notified.

Town Offices Closed Monday, January 19
Town of Amherst Offices will be closed Monday, January 19 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. **While this holiday does not usually impact Modern Disposal Services refuse and recycling collection, due to the forecasted Winter Weather Event, pickup will be delayed one day, with Friday's pickup on Saturday.

Erie County has announced that a Travel Advisory will be in effect for all of the county starting at 10:00 PM Sunday, January 18. Please avoid travel if at all possible.

Refuse & Recycling Schedule Impacted by Storm Warning
Modern Disposal Services has announced that due to the forecasted Winter Weather Event, refuse and recycling will NOT be picked up in Amherst on Monday, January 19. The schedule will be delayed one day, with Monday pickup on Tuesday; Tuesday pickup on Wednesday, etc. Residents who normally have pickup on Friday will be serviced on Saturday this week. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Senior Center Closed Tuesday, Jan. 20
Senior center classes, programs and clubs are cancelled Tuesday, Jan. 20. Amherst Senior Transportation Service will not be operational and lunch is cancelled due to sub zero temperatures and winds. Th center staff will contact registrants to check in on nutrition needs.

SFD Notice of Permissive Referendum
NOTICE OF PERMISSIVE REFERENDUM
SNYDER FIRE DISTRICT
TOWN OF AMHERST
ERIE COUNTY, NEW YORK
By resolution dated the 20th day of January 2026, the Snyder Fire District has approved a resolution subject to permissive referendum to withdraw up to $120,000.00 from its Apparatus Capital Reserve Fund in order to purchase a new fire-rescue vehicle (Silverado) and to outfit the vehicle with lighting, warning devices and necessary equipment. Petitions requesting a referendum must be submitted to the secretary of the Snyder Fire District no later than thirty (30) days after the date of publication of this notice.

2026 Painted Traffic Boxes Contest
The Town of Amherst Arts & Culture in Public Places Board (ACPPB) is excited to announce the 2026 Painted Traffic Boxes Contest. This is our sixth year painting the Town of Amherst’s traffic boxes. All artists interested in making their mark in the Town of Amherst should apply! Severe Winter Storm Warning
A severe winter storm is expected to impact the Town of Amherst from Sunday, January 25 – Monday, January 26. Forecast is calling for heavy snow, bitter cold and hazardous travel. Please avoid unnecessary travel. Go through your emergency preparedness checklist and ensure you are heating your home safely. The Town is ready to respond and urges everyone to follow weather updates and warnings. By keeping the roadways clear, emergency responders can best address critical calls for help. Amherst Police, Highway and Emergency Services will be working continuously. Updates will be posted throughout this winter weather event. Stay safe, stay home, stay warm. When a Code Blue is in effect (temperature or windchill is 32 or below), you can call 211 to report the location of an unhoused individual.

Center for Senior Services Closures for Jan. 26
Amherst Center for Senior Services classes, clubs, and activities are canceled on Monday, January 26. As of Sunday evening, Amherst Meals On Wheels will continue to operate and lunch will be available at the Senior Center from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Pickleball at Clearfield Community Center is canceled and Amherst Senior Transportation Services (ASTS) will not be running. Early voting is still scheduled to take place. Please monitor the Erie County Board of Elections for any updates or changes. The NYS Citizen Preparedness Training scheduled for Monday is canceled and will be rescheduled.

Notice of Special Planning Board Meeting
The Town of Amherst Planning Board is holding a Special Board Meeting in the Amherst Municipal Building, 5583 Main Street, Williamsville, NY on Thursday, January 29, 2026 at 6:30 pm. The special meeting has been schedule because the board meeting held on Thursday, January 15, 2026 could not take place because there was no quorum of members present. The special meeting has been scheduled to review the pending petitions that were on the January 15, 2026 agenda.

PSA: DMV offices, online services to close statewide 2/13-2/17 for system upgrade
All Department of Motor Vehicle offices across the state will close at 2pm on Friday, February 13 and stay closed until Tuesday, February 17. Phone and online services will also be unavailable during that time as well while the NYS DMV upgrades their systems. (The DMV is operated by NYS. This information is shared as a public service announcement to assist residents in decision making.)

State of the Town - 2026

Girls Only Try Hockey for Free Day

Erie County Veterans Service Agency Outreach
Erie County Veterans Service Agency will host an outreach on Tuesday, March. 10 at Amherst Town Hall, 5583 Main Street, to help Amherst veterans/families with any questions or concerns. Learn about resources that can be helpful to veterans and their families. ECVSA will help with gathering the information necessary to support a claim, filing the claim, and tracking the claim through the VA system. Can also assist with filing appeals for denied claims. Informal Review Applications due to Assessor's Office on March 27
The Assessor’s office is now accepting Informal Review Applications. Property owners can mail in or drop off the applications now through March 27th. Instructions and forms can be found on our website at the link below. Decisions will be sent out in early May. If you still disagree, you can file a grievance with the Board of Assessment Review, which will take place May 26th, 2026.

Highway Department – Leaf Pickup Update
As long as weather conditions remain favorable, the Amherst Highway Road Crews are planning a sweep of the entire town to pick up leaves that could not be gathered due to early snowfall combined with late season leaf shedding at the end of 2025. Crews will pass through every street once, starting on Monday, March 23. If you have leaves, please place them at the curb. Do not place leaf piles in the roadway. If you have any questions, please call Highway Dispatch at (716) 631-7117. * Please note that the annual Yard Waste Pickup begins in April and leaves can also be placed in appropriate bags and containers to be picked up with regular trash. Yard Waste Schedule & Policies - Program Starts April 1
The Town of Amherst’s annual yard waste collection program will begin on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. Homeowners are encouraged to properly dispose of yard waste to allow it to be composted, thus reducing landfill waste and cost. Volunteers Needed - Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper’s Spring Sweep is part of the annual Great Lakes CleanUP to remove litter from our shorelines and protect our waterways. Local Spring Sweep events get more than 1,000 volunteers together around Earth Day to remove thousands of pounds of trash from our shorelines and communities. Battery Energy Storage
The Amherst Planning Department is holding a training session for members of the Planning Board, Town Board, Zoning Board of Appeals; and the local District Fire Chiefs addressing Battery Energy Storage Systems facility development and their impacts. The training will be held at the Honorable Shirley Chisholm Library at Audubon on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at 6:00 pm.

Rabies Vaccination Clinics - May 2 & 9
Erie County announces the dates for two upcoming rabies vaccination clinics for cats, ferrets and dogs: 9 am - 1 PM Saturday, May 2 at Town of Tonawanda Highway Garage and 9 AM - 1 pm Saturday, May 9 at Buffalo Public School #84.
